Minneriya National Park

Witness the greatest gathering of elephants in Asia

Nestled in the dry plains of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, Minneriya National Park is a place where nature unfolds on a grand scale. While it may seem like just another wilderness at first glance, it holds a seasonal secret that draws travelers and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world: The Gathering.

Between July and October, during the dry season, hundreds of wild elephants converge at the Minneriya Reservoir — a vast, man-made tank built by an ancient king over 1,700 years ago. As smaller water sources disappear across the region, these majestic creatures come together in astonishing numbers, forming one of the largest elephant gatherings in Asia.

A jeep safari through the park offers front-row seats to this extraordinary event. You’ll see family herds led by wise matriarchs, playful calves rolling in the mud, and towering bulls quietly watching over the plains. The scale, harmony, and intimacy of the experience leave a lasting impression — a rare glimpse into the complex social lives of wild elephants.

Beyond elephants, Minneriya is home to a wide range of wildlife. Look out for spotted deer grazing in the grasslands, troops of toque macaques darting through the trees, and colorful birds swooping overhead. Occasionally, a leopard or sloth bear may appear on the edges of the forest.

The park’s landscape shifts between open plains, wetlands, and scrubby forests, offering both scenic beauty and ideal habitats for wildlife viewing. It’s also perfectly located near key cultural sites like Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, making it an easy and rewarding addition to any itinerary.

Whether you're an animal lover, a photographer, or a curious traveler, Minneriya offers one of the most raw and moving encounters with

Sri Lanka’s wild heart.
